The esplanade of the European Parliament in Brussels, formally known as Place Luxembourg, will today be transformed into a full-blown Maltese square as the biggest Malta Week yet kicks off. For the first time since it started being organised four years ago, Malta Week is being run jointly by all the five MEPs.
In the past years it was organised by the two Nationalist MEPs, Simon Busuttil and David Casa. However, this year the three Labour MEPs have been roped in to make the event a major showcase of Maltese culture and culinary tradition.
A total of 145 Maltese personalities will be in attendance, including the best of the island’s music scene such as Ira Losco, Chiara, Winter Moods and Nafra, eight cooks, artists and Finance Minister Tonio Fenech, who flew in to Brussels yesterday specifically for the event.
Typical Maltese food will be whipped up during the three days of events with some 4,000 pastizzi, 3,000 imqaret and hundreds of kilos of ravioli served to the hundreds of eurocrats expected to attend under the 1,100-square metres of tents put up in the square.
The Malta Week will also feature the re-enactment of a Maltese wedding by the Mellieħa council, wine-tasting, lunchtime concerts on the main stage and a crafts area showing artisans working on Maltese lace, fili-gree, glass blowing, carnival floats and a Maltese clock gilder.
